Much of this transformation has been made possible by <strong>synthetic zeolites<\/strong>, catalysts designed by the <strong>Spanish chemist Avelino Corma \ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddf8<\/strong>, <strong>European Inventor of the Year 2023<\/strong> <strong>.<\/strong><\/p><p>Many of the products we use and have around us are manufactured using catalysis, a process that speeds up chemical reactions to a matter of minutes or seconds.<\/p><p>Corma has developed a <strong>series of sustainable catalysts<\/strong> that help produce more output in less time and with less waste.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Synthetic zeolites<\/strong>, minerals with crystalline structures, composed of aluminum, silicon, and oxygen.<\/li><li>Their micropores are selective: they trap certain molecules so that a specific chemical reaction can take place inside their cavities.<\/li><\/ul><p>Since 1989, together with his team, he has developed more than 60 zeolites with industrial applications around the world:<\/p><p>\ud83d\udd38Improved fuels, such as higher-octane gasoline<\/p><p>\ud83d\udd38Biodiesel production, to obtain hydrocarbons from biomass.<\/p><p>\ud83d\udd38Oil refining using more efficient processes.<\/p><p>\ud83d\udd38Reducing pollutants from factories and vehicles,<\/p><p>\ud83d\udd38Production of pharmaceuticals and fragrances.<\/p><p>\ud83d\udd38Water purification\u2026<\/p><p>Today, as he has for the past 30 years, he continues his research work at the <strong>Institute of Chemical Technology<\/strong>, a joint center of the <strong>Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV)<\/strong><strong> and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).<\/strong><\/p><p>More than 900 research articles.<\/p><p>More than 200 patents and numerous awards.<\/p><p>A legacy from Spain to help make the world more sustainable.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In his own words:<\/p><blockquote><p><strong><em>Chemicals don\u2019t cause pollution.
